I'm Back-And In Style

So I've obviously been neglecting my Pilates blogging. With the start of the fall season comes all sorts of new classes and a new schedule to get used to. I'm loving my new classes and students!
I also was busy earlier in this month dancing in an incredible tribute to 9/11 at Lincoln Center. You can see the video of this moving performance I was honored to be a part of here:

Alright enough with my excuses......
With the start of the new season and many of you dedicating yourselves to classes, I find this is a great time to find that motivation. And if you are like me, that motivation can be buying yourself exciting, shiny new things! Nothing will make you more excited to get on your mat than a mat that makes you happy. I just bought this one:

Pilates Pulp Fiction

Found this great graphic online. I feel the back cover to this raunchy fitness classic would read something like this:
"With her suggestive moves like the reverse crunch she will make you feel unfit with no hope. Yet let her keep coming around, and the longer this hard core lady stays, the more you will yearn for her abdominal-flexing, oblique-twisting moves."
If Pilates was marketed like this-especially with the R for Really Hard rating-I think it would really catch on with a whole new crowd. I'm letting all sorts of fun marketing ideas around this concept marinate.....

Earthquake Shake Up

This afternoon the the east coast felt the earth shake under their feet as Virginia was hit with a 5.9 magnitude quake.
The shock of the shake disturbing the balance of a beautiful late August day made me think how importance balance really is. Balance is not just important for ballerinas. We need balance for everyday physical challenges like reaching into the cupboard, bending down to put on a shoe, lifting a leg up into the car, and even traveling up and down stairs require subtle shifts in the amount of weight placed on each leg. Without a sense of balance even the most basic activities like walking become a challenge. This is why many older adults with instability are prone to accidental falls which can result in the leading cause of  serious injury and death according to the CDC.
You can start to build and maintain your balance through training now and you don't have to ever stop doing many of the exercises in Pilates that are very therapeutic and build balance.
One of my favorite Pilates exercises for balance that I like to do at the start of Pilates class is the Kneeling Arm and Leg Extension. It is one of the best Pilates balance exercises because it incorporates both strength and stability of the core right into the exercise. This exercise is great for the whole body because it helps you learn to stabilize your center while moving your limbs, improves your pelvic stability and strengthens your gluteal muscles.
Joseph Pilates skiing

Joseph Pilates was an avid skier. Skiing requires what instructors call "fore-aft" balance, which refers to the balance transitions between the heel and the forefoot. Pilates was ahead of his time, in that he realized that the core muscles would control this type of balance.
Another great balance exercise he developed possibly with this in mind is the Open Leg Rocker which enhances your ability to balance when your legs are either in front of or behind your center of gravity. Make sure to begin in an upright seated position, balancing on your sit bones, which are the two bones in your buttocks.
And of course, the use of the stability ball in Pilates class creates even more intense challenges for balance building core exercises.
The Pilates Shoulder Bridge works the back, core and gluteal muscles and adding the stability ball makes it a whole new ball game and one of the best balance training exercises.
Pilates also helps decrease stress which will help bring your whole life into more balance which is important in this crazy earth shaking world we live in. So grab your mat and get balanced! Leave the shaking for your next martini.

Pilates or Yoga?

When it comes to Yoga and Pilates, I have found that there is a great divide between which mat you are on. And that is fine. What is important is not just that you are exercising but that you feel good while you are doing it whether it is a meditative sun salutation in Yoga class or attempting to control yourself from the core in a Pilates teaser. Pilates and Yoga are separate but equal routes to better fitness and health. What is important is to understand which one is better for you. (And don't worry your mat won't think you are a cheating slut if you take it to both Pilates and Yoga!)
Both Pilates and Yoga will tighten your midsection, build strength, increase your stamina and flexibility, help you stand taller, and feel healthier. And both are "mind-body" programs that require concentration and consistent practice and will help to relieve stress. And while many of the exercises in Yoga and Pilates can look similar, their execution is very different causing them to target different muscles and have different levels of endurance.
A big difference between the two is that Yoga is a fundamentally spiritual practice where the primary purpose is to teach students how to quiet their minds and enter a meditative state to achieve union between mind, body, and spirit. Pilates, on the other hand, is a strictly a physical exercise program used specifically to correct imbalances in the body, strengthen muscles and in many cases, become pain-free and improve posture. Even the use of breath, while important to both, is approached differently. Yoga breath is in through the nose and out through the nose to create inner heat and produce an audible "ha” sounds that’s used as a tool for meditation. Pilates students breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth to focus on emptying the diaphragm and contracting the deep abdominal muscles.
Pilates may seem similar to Yoga because it was developed with Yoga exercises as part of its inspiration. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates initially to mainly to be used as therapy for bed-ridden injured soldiers to re-build strength. It is for this reason that in Mat Pilates, exercises are performed supine, prone or in a side-lying position. Because of this, they are more accessible for people with knee, rotator cuff and back problems. Pilates with a well-trained instructor is excellent pre-and post-operative therapy. And even people with regular back pain caused by stress or bad posture from sitting at a computer tell me all the time how much of a difference Pilates was making for them.
Yoga class on the other hand typically include standing, balancing, seated postures and inversions, such as shoulder stand, crow pose or headstand asanas. Some of these poses can be hard for people with joint and balance issues. But that shouldn't scare you away from Yoga! Just make sure if you have knee, ankle, spinal issues or any recent injury, to let your instructor know so they can give you safe modifications. I personally really do not like going upside down so I find myself enjoying a quiet break in child's pose during that time in Yoga class. Don't let yourself be intimidated in Yoga class. It is easy to look around at these people chilling on their heads and doing crazy acts of contortion and want to run your asana right out of the room.
"Yes Sunshine. Nice. Now come on everyone. It's easy. Just get on your head and we'll be staying there for the rest of class."
A benefit I find with Pilates (other than not having to be on my head) is the use of props including the stability ball, thera-bands, weights, pilates ring, and in some classes even the equipment including the Pilates Reformer. Many people find they enjoy these additions to their workout because they add more diversity and challenge by creating resistance. For many people, the pace of Pilates and the use of props make the class feel like more of a "workout" in the traditional sense.
Pilates is also an excellent cross-trainer for athletes because of the focus it brings to developing core strength which will then increase balance, flexibility, endurance, agility decreasing their chances for injury. Many people and professional athletes and dancers find Pilates to be a secret weapon for them as runners, dancers, golfers, skiers.
What it all comes down to is what is best for you and what you like to do. The best is to try them both and remember that good instructors make a difference so try different classes to find the one that suits you best. It is a growing trend for many Pilates instructors to infuse Yoga with their Pilates class (aka Yogilates) so that may be right up your alley-though note that many purists of the two practices consider this to be as preposterous as merging pickles and chocolate. As I see it, Yoga and Pilates are both wonderful ways to feel and look great. And I haven't tasted anything dipped in chocolate that I haven't liked.
Case in point-these "exotic" chocolate bars fuse bacon, plantains, curry, chillies, wasabi, and mushrooms to create delicious delectable treats! Check them out for at www.vosgeschocolate.com! And then come to Pilates to work them off! ;-)

There's an App for That

Recently a study hit that announced that an alarming number of people said they would rather be without things like sex, exercise, or their toothbrush than their cell phone.
So in our phone obsessed culture, if you are into Pilates, apparently there's an app for that.

These apps boast that they are your ticket to the six pack of your dreams obtained on your own time. In my opinion, having an app on your phone to do Pilates doesn't mean that you will change your lifestyle. If you find that it is hard to make time in your schedule to get to the gym or get to a Pilates class, how will having an app on your phone change your priorities? Yes, it is there for you to look at any time, but you still have to have the time and interest to commit to doing the exercises regularly. Not to mention, these apps are not at all ideal as an introduction to any work out program, most of all Pilates which is a detail oriented program filled with nuances in its execution which make all the difference. An instructor's guidance will make you understand Pilates and get the most out of it. Using these apps as your instructor will not get you the same results as going to a class. These Pilates apps are not the Shazam of exercising that you can just hold up to your flabby stomach and get abs.
So what, if any, are the benefits of the Pilates apps? Some of the fitness and specific Pilates apps offer a log where you can track what you complete each day. This could be the most beneficial part of the the concept of a fitness app because it allows you a place to document what you are doing and through this action you may develop a sense of accountability to keep up with your chosen regimen. But, to me that sounds like a lot of additional work. You could just grab a friend, find an instructor you like, and make it part of your schedule to just go to Pilates class. Sure it is going to be a time commitment and a financial commitment beyond the $1.99 app cost, but in the long run, you will be happy that you put down your phone for that couple hours a week to live in the moment and get more fit.
Or you could just buy this t-shirt:

Tanilates

So last summer I saw a flyer for "Tanilates" classes in Central Park to "tan while you tone." I was burned. How did I not think of this?! With the cast of Jersey Shore and my favorite Jerseylicious making GTL (gym, tanning, laundry) a way of life, anything that combines any two of those things will obviously be the next It Thing. Guess now I'll have to settle for coming up with a way for Pilates and laundry to combine. Hmmm......perhaps LaundraMat Pilates? Fitness while you fluff? Yeah, that idea needs some work.
But "Tanilates" is going strong thanks to it's bronzed founder Ashley Winelander and I have to admit I love the idea of taking your mat out into the open air for (sunscreen protected) sun exposure. I think the beach is a great place to be inspired to work on your core-especially if you're like me and a trip to the beach can find you lazing about for hours on a towel with a drink in hand washing down a boardwalk hot dog and ice cream treat.
That's me doing some "tanilates."
So the point is Pilates can be done almost anywhere so there is really no excuse to not just drop and do your Hundreds in the park, at the beach, in the middle of the sidewalk in rush hour.......just don't forget your sunscreen. No matter how toned you are you will always look stupid with a sun burn.
This guy shows us the wrong way to feel the burn.

Man-ilates from the Mat to the Mattress

Pilates is not just for women! It addresses issues that most men have: tightness in the hamstrings and low back, poor deep core strength, and poor posture. Most men, even those who exercise, lack range of motion which could be why many experience back pain. So come to Pilates boys! It's also a great place to meet fit women!
(Maybe this is also just my plea to see more yummy specimen like above in my classes!)
And on that note: Pilates can improve your sex life! It reduces stress which is a main block in many couples' sex life. It increases flexibility which opens up the door to more creativity. It increases your stamina. And it helps you feel more attractive as you know you are getting fit. You can read more here: http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-2777/8-Ways-Pilates-Improves-Your-Sex-Life.html
