So in our phone obsessed culture, if you are into Pilates, apparently there's an app for that.
These apps boast that they are your ticket to the six pack of your dreams obtained on your own time. In my opinion, having an app on your phone to do Pilates doesn't mean that you will change your lifestyle. If you find that it is hard to make time in your schedule to get to the gym or get to a Pilates class, how will having an app on your phone change your priorities? Yes, it is there for you to look at any time, but you still have to have the time and interest to commit to doing the exercises regularly. Not to mention, these apps are not at all ideal as an introduction to any work out program, most of all Pilates which is a detail oriented program filled with nuances in its execution which make all the difference. An instructor's guidance will make you understand Pilates and get the most out of it. Using these apps as your instructor will not get you the same results as going to a class. These Pilates apps are not the Shazam of exercising that you can just hold up to your flabby stomach and get abs.
So what, if any, are the benefits of the Pilates apps? Some of the fitness and specific Pilates apps offer a log where you can track what you complete each day. This could be the most beneficial part of the the concept of a fitness app because it allows you a place to document what you are doing and through this action you may develop a sense of accountability to keep up with your chosen regimen. But, to me that sounds like a lot of additional work. You could just grab a friend, find an instructor you like, and make it part of your schedule to just go to Pilates class. Sure it is going to be a time commitment and a financial commitment beyond the $1.99 app cost, but in the long run, you will be happy that you put down your phone for that couple hours a week to live in the moment and get more fit.
